Help! My loved one has an addiction! What can you do if this was you? How can you help your loved one and are you helping or hindering?
At our 2 October 2025 FIGHT4HOPE: Restoring Lives and Healing Hearts from Addictions webinar, One Hope Centre counsellor, Emily Foo, shared how family members play an important role in the recovery of individuals who suffer from addictions.
Addiction not only affects the individual – it deeply impacts the entire family.
Families face financial hardship, stress, anxiety, and depression, broken trust, disrupted dynamics, and sometimes even abuse or neglect of safety. Children may suffer adverse experiences, while unhealthy patterns can be passed across generations.
The good news is that families can play a vital role in healing and restoration. Recovery begins not with blame, but with open conversations, understanding addiction as a disease rather than as a moral failing, and learning healthier ways to cope.
A survey of One Hope Centre’s gambling addiction clients done in 2021 highlighted the following important success factors for recovery:
Attending counselling – whether as an individual or as a family
Unwavering family support
Joining peer support groups
Facing debt courageously and committing to repayment
Faith as a source of strength
Families can support recovery by:
Improving communication and listening
Learning coping strategies and setting healthy boundaries
Engaging actively in treatment and relapse prevention
Caring for their own mental health and avoiding enabling behaviours
Emily also shared some Case studies of the clients she had worked with. The cases– from gambling to spending addictions – demonstrate that recovery journeys differ but they all point to the importance of counselling, family involvement, self-care, and personal responsibility.
Ultimately, ownership is key. Families can walk alongside the recovering person, but recovery requires the individual to take responsibility for their choices and actions.
