Ali (not his real name) has been working with our counsellor at One Hope Centre to overcome his gambling addiction. His struggles began as a teenager when he was involved with a gang and when he first started gambling. Today, Ali is a married man with family responsibilities, supported by a wife who has stood by him despite his gambling addiction. Thus far, he has been attending counselling and has not relapsed.
As part of his healing process, Ali wrote himself a letter which serves as a personal reminder of his commitment to be honest with his wife, who has been his unwavering supporter, and of his responsibility to his family who depend on him. He shares this letter so that others like him can be encouraged in their path to recovery.
Ali's Letter to Himself:
Dear Ali,
As you read this letter, take a moment to recognize how far you've come. Alhamdulillah (All Praises to God)—you have been doing great so far. Never look back to the mistakes of your past. Instead, keep moving forward and maintain the positive momentum you've built.
Continue with your prayers, for He will guide you to the right path. Continue being completely honest with your wife—never lie about anything, no matter how small. She has helped you tremendously through this journey. Remember all the difficult times and yet she has stood by your side. Be grateful and show your appreciation.
When hard times hit you again—and they may—remember how you overcame the struggles of the past. Draw on that same strength and resilience. Always remember: your family depends on you. If you continue doing good, In Shaa Allah (God willing), good things will come your way. Trust in His plan.
With hope and determination,
Ali
