One Hope Centre’s (OHC) Client C shares how his addiction to pornography affected his life and family relationships.
After going through counselling at OHC, C has found some peace and shares his story to help others who are struggling with the same addiction as him. He hopes that this will give them comfort and solace.
When C was deep in pornography addiction, pornography distorted his perception of women, leading him to objectify them. He began to believe that aggressive sexual behaviour was acceptable.
His standards for his partner became unrealistic as well. He expected them to have the same type of bodies as those he saw online.
As his addiction grew, there was an increased need for newer and more intense material. He also became more selfish and disconnected from those around him. Each time after he viewed pornography, feelings of guilt and hopelessness will overwhelm him, making him doubt his future, including the possibility of marriage.
After C received counselling at OHC, he began to learn coping techniques. He will limit his exposure to triggers by reducing social media use and avoiding objectifying his thoughts. He has also learnt to identify vulnerable times, such as being alone after work, when he knows he will be most vulnerable and he will plan alternative activities.
Today, C is still recovering and takes each day at a time. He turns to his faith which provides him with strength and guidance on his path to recovery.
